What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a therapy performed by trained clinicians using thin, sterile needles to target tight bands of muscle known as trigger points. This technique helps release tension, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Dry needling is not acupuncture—though it uses similar tools, its purpose, training, and application are different.

Benefits of Dry Needling

Many patients choose dry needling as part of a broader treatment plan for issues such as:

  • Muscle tightness
  • Limited range of motion
  • Trigger points and knotting
  • Tension from overuse or poor posture
  • Athletic recovery support
  • Facilitate a healing process to damaged tissue
  • Complementing chiropractic, massage, and physiotherapy

Note: Results vary. Dry needling is not intended to diagnose or cure any condition. It is used as a musculoskeletal technique within a clinical setting.

How Dry Needling Works

Dry needling involves placing a thin, filiform needle into specific points within a tight or sensitive muscle. This can create a quick muscle response called a “twitch,” which often helps release tension.

Your provider may use:

  • Pistoning/Pecking techniques to activate a trigger point
  • Static needling for sustained muscle relaxation
  • Electrical stimulation (if applicable) to enhance muscle response

All treatment is tailored to your comfort level and goals.
