How Much Downtime Will I Have?

Since we are stimulating an inflammatory response, there can be some soreness after the injections. This typically lasts for 1-5 days, and is often well managed by over-the-counter pain medication, if needed. Recommendations for activity restrictions will be specific to each patient and typically allow for regular activity to resume shortly after treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is a treatment that involves using the body’s own growth factors, concentrating them, and applying them to the area that is injured or painful.

As the name implies, we utilize the platelets for the treatment, Before the treatment begins, your blood is drawn and a very specific process is used to isolate particular portions of the blood. The layer consists largely of platelets and white blood cells. The platelets contain numerous growth factors that contribute to directly stimulating repair of the body. This encourages the strongest response for stimulating healing in the affected area.

What is Prolotherapy / RIT?

Prolotherapy, also known as a Regenerative Injection Therapy, is a tool used to help with acute and chronic injuries by stimulating the body to heal.

When a ligament or tendon is injured (sprained or torn) the weakness causes instability in the joint. This generally causes pain and also allows further damage to occur.

RIT Injections are beneficial for ligament and tendon sprains, as well as cartilage damage, like the meniscus in the knee and the labrum in the shoulder. After a complete series of treatments, oftentimes a person is a completely relieved of pain.

Treatment Goals

The main goal with Regenerative Injection Therapies are to regain full function and integrity if the joint, relieve pain and get you back to doing what you love with as little downtime as possible.

So it’s like Cortisone?

Not exactly. RIT can be generally applied to the same joints and conditions that cortisone/steroid injections can be. While cortisone steroids stop inflammation in the joint, it also causes a decrease in the healing capacity of the body. RIT works to stimulate healing in the joint and thus helps stabilize the injury, eliminating the cause if the pain.

Is it Safe?

In short, YES! The solution used includes ingredients that are very safe. A thorough after care plan is provided for patients to optimize the effect of each treatment.

How often will I need to have the treatment?

Treatments are typically done every 2 to 6 weeks depending on each patient’s situation and response to treatment and can be adjusted as needed.

Patients generally require between 4 and 8 treatments for full resolution of pain, though there is often significant relief within the first few treatments. Some conditions such as chronic lower back pain may require more treatments for full resolution.

Since we are stimulating a healing response, the treatments typically offer a permanent solution. Though “touch up” injections are occasionally needed, this is generally the exception.
