WHAT EXACTLY ARE TPI’S?
Trigger Point Injections, also known as “TPI or TPI’S,” are an option for treating pain in many patients at Nevy Health. Trigger points are more commonly referred to as ‘knots’ in the muscle and often occur when the muscles do not relax or because they are tense/stressed for long periods of time. Many times, these knots can be felt under the skin. Having such “knots” can cause pain and can stress the surrounding nerves, joints, and discs of the spine.
TPI are often used to help alleviate muscle pain and decrease trigger points throughout the body helping to decrease stress on the nerves, joints, and discs of the spine. TPI have been effective in helping treat many conditions in the body.
WHY SHOULD I GET TPI’S?
We have seen excellent results in many cases when combining TPI with therapeutic massage, chiropractic adjustments and strengthening exercises to help one achieve a nonsurgical approach to pain relief and long-term healing.
HOW ARE TPI’S ADMINISTERED?
A licensed medical provider inserts a small acupuncture size needle into the trigger point. Treatment occasionally results in immediate relief and usually has no restriction of return to normal activities. The treatments are given here in the Nevy Health office and take only moments. Several different trigger points may be treated in the same visit.
WHAT IS IN THE INJECTION?
Most often, the TPI injection contains a combination any of the following: a local anesthetic, saline, as well as a homeopathic anti-inflammatory/ medication to help alleviate muscle tension/ pain. The injection helps to break down and disperse the “knot” and relax the muscle. As with any medication, potential side effects are possible but minor and include redness, soreness, and possible minor bruising around the site.
