What Is Therapeutic Fire Cupping?
Therapeutic fire cupping is a traditional healing therapy with roots in Chinese and Eastern medicine. In naturopathic care, it is used as a supportive modality to encourage circulation, reduce tissue stagnation, and assist the body’s inherent ability to heal.
Glass cups are placed on the skin after briefly warming the air inside the cup. As the air cools, gentle suction is created, lifting the skin and underlying tissue.
Fire cupping aligns with the naturopathic principle of Vis Medicatrix Naturae — the healing power of nature — by supporting the body’s self-regulating processes.
Therapeutic Intent in Naturopathic Care
Fire cupping may be incorporated into a naturopathic treatment plan to help:
- Improve circulation of blood and lymph
- Reduce muscular tension and fascial restriction
- Support detoxification pathways through enhanced tissue movement
- Relieve stress and promote parasympathetic nervous system activity
- Complement constitutional and lifestyle-based therapies
What to Expect During Your Visit
- Whole-Person Assessment – Your naturopathic doctor evaluates your health history and current concerns.
- Preparation – The skin is cleansed; oil may be applied if moving cupping is used. 3. Cup Application – A flame briefly warms the air inside the cup before placement on the skin.
- Treatment Duration – Cups remain in place for approximately 5–15 minutes. During this time the Doctor may leave the cups still or drag / glide them over the skin depending on what the goals for treatment are.
- Integration – Post-treatment guidance is provided to support your healing response.
A strong pulling or pressure sensation is normal. A tolerable discomfort is common with treatment but treatment is able to be altered if there is too much discomfort.
